Ideas to help teach them diligently

When Moses addresses the Israelites in Deuteronomy chapter 6, he makes it clear that a major part of a parent's responsibility is to teach his/her children diligently about the Lord and His law. In my previous post on parenting books, I recommended two titles that are helpful for parents (Teach Them Diligently by Lou Priolo & Everyday Talk by John Younts).

Here are the resources I have used with the girls in my (imperfect but hopeful) attempt to teach them consistently & constantly throughout our days. This is by no means an exhaustive list but I've found that the Lord has used each of these books, CDs, & videos to spark some excellent & profound conversations with my daughters!

Leading Little Ones to God
The Visual Bible: Matthew
(The only parts the girls haven't seen in full yet are
Herod's slaughter of the children and the crucifixion;
it is my conviction that those scenes
are too violent for them at this time.)

Music
The Sing the Word Series

Sing the Word From A to Z, A New Commandment, God Our Provider, Great in Counsel and Mighty in Deed, The Heavens Declare, All Nations Shall Worship, & Credo (I believe...). All songs are verses set to music! For the family who is more conservative in its musical selection, this family uses no electric instruments or drums. They adhere mainly to the instruments mentioned in Scripture.

Glory Revealed, Volumes I & II

The Glory Revealed Project is a collaboration of some of Christian music's most well-known artists - taking favorite passages of Scripture and putting them to song.
There are a variety of musical styles represented here!

I know I've left out a few, but I'm praying this will be a blessing to a parent who is wondering where to begin! You've probably noticed that most of the links are to Sonlight - it's because we are headed into our 5th year of homeschooling with Sonlight, and I'm (clearly) partial. If you end up ordering any of the books, see my Educating at Home page for a discount code off of your first Sonlight order!

Teaching them diligently,
for His glory!

  1. We use Leading Little Ones to God and my girls and I love it. I haven't heard of many of the others you have listed, but I'm intrigued. We give Bible story books and devotionals to our children at Christmas time, so I might have a few new ones to choose from here. Thanks!

    1. You're so welcome! My girls' favorite Bible story book is the 101 Favorite Stories from the Bible - even my older two (7 & 6) pull it off of the shelf almost every day, almost 4 years after I read through it with them. Leading Little Ones has been such a blessing to our family - we're going through it now. God often uses it to minister to me, too :)

I am really thankful for your blog!! I've been following it for a while and have been challenged by your series on entitlement - please keep sharing the things the Lord puts on your heart. You are a gifted writer :)

  2. I love Leading Little Ones to God. Our pastor and his wife give it out to most of the young families at our church and we've enjoyed introducing it to our 4 year old recently. I'm also a huge fan of Glory Revealed. Thanks for giving me new options to look into!

    1. You are welcome!

That is a wonderful idea (giving Leading Little Ones to God as a gift). It's been helpful for not only teaching my girls but helping me understand some of the basics better.

I've just bookmarked your blog and can't wait to read a little more tomorrow!

  3. Thank you for your kind words!

You've got some helpful hints, deals, & reviews over at your site - what a blessing that you're willing to share those with others :) I really liked your idea of covering the boxes with pretty paper & ribbons - I might try that out to organize my (very cluttered!) desk. I have three little girls who would loveeee to help with a project like that!

    Thanks again for stopping by!

  4. These are fabulous suggestions, Lish. Sadly, we do not do much bible reading. The days go so fast - and I am so imperfect. However I try to lead by example. I don't remember the exact situation, but just yesterday i was talking to my son about how she should act - and asked him - what do you think our Heavenly Father would say. He looked up at me and said that he could have responded better.

I am pinning and sharing this post. I think this will really help others in helping their children. Thank you so much for his inspired post and sharing it on the #homeschoollinkup.

    1. Thanks, Lisa :) I can appreciate the days going fast! For us it works well to read the day's reading while they eat breakfast right now - otherwise, it just doesn't happen.

You might be blessed by the book Everyday Talk by John Younts - it sounds like you're already practicing what he writes about. It is a practical guide for how to engage kids in talking about the Lord throughout the day. It helped change how I parent when I read it a couple of years ago! :)

I'm blessed to be a part of the homeschool link-up. Thanks for your willingness to host!
