If

Amy Carmichael was a Irish lady who spent 55 years of her life ministering to the children & women of India at the Dohnavur Fellowship which she founded in 1901. I love to read about her life and read her books & poetry.

One of my favorite pieces is a collection of brief thoughts & poems titled "If." They challenge my heart afresh, each time I read them. I'm sharing a few that really spoke to my heart this evening, in this season of my life. There are so many areas of my life where I 'know nothing of Calvary love'! Do you find yourself in any of these?

If I can enjoy a joke at the expense of another;
if I can in any way slight another in conversation,
or even in thought,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

Pin it!
If I take offence easily;
if I am content to continue in cold unfriendliness,
though friendship be possible,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If I belittle those whom I am called to serve,
talk of their weak points in contrast
perhaps with what I think of as my strong points;
if I adopt a superior attitude,
forgetting "Who made thee to differ?
and what hast thou that thou hast not received?"
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If a sudden jar can cause me
to speak an impatient, unloving word,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.
For a cup brimful of sweet water cannot spill
even one drop of bitter water,
however suddenly jolted.

If the ultimate, the hardest, cannot be asked of me;
if my fellows hesitate to ask it
and turn to someone else,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

When an answer I did not expect
comes to a prayer which I believed I truly meant,
I shrink back from it;
if the burden my Lord asks me to bear
be not the burden of my heart's choice,
and I fret inwardly and do not welcome His will,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If I can easily discuss
the shortcomings and the sins of any;
if I can speak in a casual way
even of a child's misdoings,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If I am afraid to speak the truth lest I lose affection,
or lest the one concerned should say,
"You do not understand",
or because I fear to lose my reputation for kindness;
if I put my own good name
before the other's highest good,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.

If I feel bitter toward those who condemn me,
as it seems to me, unjustly,
forgetting that if they knew me as I know myself
they would condemn me much more,
then I know nothing of Calvary love.
[Amy Carmichael]

Desperate to know ever more of Calvary love,
for His glory!

A sweet reminder

"You're a terrible homemaker. Look at this house!"
"Who gave you children? You're not fit to raise the girls. "
"You don't know how to be a friend!"
"You are unloved, and you are not good at loving others."
"You'll never be able to overcome (selfishness, stubbornness, laziness, food, ....etc)"
"You haven't changed at all in the last few years - you won't change."
"There's nothing that you are good at."
"The only reason you follow Jesus is so you can be lazy and stay home...you're not really a Christian."

These are the kinds of words that I have heard in the past few months - some said to me, some echoing in my mind as thoughts from the enemy of my soul. Some over and over again, others with a contempt so fierce that hearing it once was enough to etch it deep into my heart.

Since my Lord is not ever in the business of discouragement (gentle & firm correction and strong convictions, yes! discouragement & belittlement, no!) - I can step objectively outside these accusations and tell you from where they come. But it doesn't mean that the words don't cut like a double-edged sword. That's why it's so crucial to spend lots of time reading and rereading the Word of God (which is sharper than a double-edged sword! [Heb 4:12]), to pour truth in on top of the lies.

I got to spend a good amount of time in prayer this morning (which doesn't happen as much as I'd like), pouring out my aching heart before the Lord...and then just listening. "Remind me today, Lord, that I'm precious to You!" and the reply came softly, in the stillness:

'I have a pretty amazing imagination, my child;
and I created you. YOU.
The shape of your face, the color of your eyes,
the fullness & craziness of your hair,
everything. Just so.
Your build, your talents, your grandest dreams -
I put them all together in a way that delights Me.
You
are made in My image,
and You are my daughter...
You are treasured by me.
I knew your name before your parents did.
Don't you remember what it means?
"of noble birth"
You are a daughter of the King!!
I chose you to be Mine
long before you chose Me!
Even when you feel unloved by man,
it doesn't change the truth that
I love you
and I will care for you
just like I always have.
Cast your cares upon Me -
follow Me, my dear,
and let Me do the rest.'

So, friend, if you need the same encouragement this morning -
You, too, are loved by the One who created you. just so.
And I am praying hard for your heart this morning, that you'll cover the lies
in the Truth of God's Word.

Created & dearly loved,
for His glory!

The Sun, The Moon, and Abby

I love that God made children to be curious about the wonders of the world around them.

And I especially love that God seemed pleased to make my daughters to be enthusiastically curious.

While leaving the grocery store this morning, Abby asked why we can't see the moon during the day when it shines so brightly in the sky at night. Here is a reasonable re-creation of the conversation:

A: Mom, how come you can't see the moon in the daytime? It's in the sky at night and it's so shiny!
H: Mooooooon! MooooooooooooOOOOOOOooooon?!!? Where moon? (repeat continually in the background of the rest of the conversation)
M: You can't see the moon in the daytime because the sun is brighter, and our part of the earth is toward the sun. The moon doesn't actually have any light of its own - God made the moon to reflect the sun's bright light in the darkness of nighttime. So in the day, we don't need to see it, because a brighter light is shining - the sun!
E: Oh. Cool.
A: So the moon shines sunlight on us when we see it at night?
M: Yep! Did you know that God made people to be kind of like the moon? When we're left to ourselves, we don't have any light of our own to shine. But He made us to reflect how brilliant and marvelous Jesus is when things are dark - when we think and act and become more like Jesus, His light reflects off of us into other people's lives.
A: Wow.
E: That's neat. The way God did that!
A: And thought of it like that!
M: It sure is! God planned every detail like that!

Thanks, Jesus, for the reminder that it is more awesome to be a reflector of Your light than it is to try to be a light on my own. That in the sunny seasons of my life, the best thing that my heart can hope for is that people don't see much of me because a Brighter, Purer Light is shining!! and that in the nighttime seasons, that people see that I am but a reflector of Your Light as I travel in the darkness.

And thank You for my daughters, who You've created to reflect Your love into my life when I forget just how brilliant You are!

Just a reflection,
for His glory!

Leaf Lessons

As Will and I were driving to Keene this morning, I was in awe of the canvas of glorious color around me. Fall in NH is gorgeous! And I was quietly thanking God for His vast creativity and for giving us something so beautiful to enjoy as the weather gets a little cooler...and cooler...and cooler.

Mount Monadnock in the fall. Majestic and lovely!
I was thinking about why it is that the leaves change color. Not completely understanding the science behind it, I do know that they turn these brilliant  and deep shades of red, orange, yellow...because they are dying. Because soon there will not be enough food produced in the tree for them to keep them through the winter - they will die and fall to the ground.

Oh, what a picture of what our lives in Christ should be!

My life is most brilliant and glorious as I die to self and am surrendered to a new season of life in Christ. I am a beautiful and vibrant example of His glory on display when I stop feeding my soul with the temporary food of this world (keeping up with the most popular musicians or theologies or actors or sports stars or gossip or talk shows or reality shows or the latest political fiasco or a hobby or self-indulgent lifestyle that does not impact beyond my fleeting earthly existence). When I relinquish my rights to my dreams, my future, my desires - then He can shine through my life by molding me into who He made me to be: a reflection of Him! And He's the most beautiful being ever!

Praising God for the beauty of dying leaves,
and the lessons therein,
for His glory~

Teaching: part 1

I first decided I wanted to be a teacher when I was in the 4th grade. Mrs. Zecha was my teacher, and I have fond memories of her and that year of school. In middle school, it was Mrs. Thibodeau & Mr. Emerson that caused me to think more seriously about teaching as a job. Then in high school, Ms. Witty, Mme. Howard, and Ms. Hart -whether they knew it or not- encouraged and inspired me to attend college to pursue a teaching career.

In 2004, I graduated from Keene State College with a degree in mathematics and certification to teach middle & high school math and got an amazing job right away teaching 7th grade in Windham, NH. I had a two-year "career", and I loved the students and my team. And then, our sweet Elizabeth made her grand entrance, and I gave up teaching as a career...

...or had I?

I've been asked on multiple occasions whether I felt like I was throwing my education away by staying home with my children. No. No!! I have not wasted my education - I have redefined my teaching career. I teach my children now. And this year, Elizabeth & Abby started kindergarten at home. I am teaching reading, writing, math, science, and world history. and morals. and responsibility. and self-discipline. and how to make peace. and life skills. and basic culinary arts. and contentment. and so on. I am also actively teaching Hannah how not to eat EVERYTHING off of the floor and how to sleep through the night - also important life skills!

Another age group that the Lord has given me a desire to teach is the young ladies - middle school through early twenties. As I have learned more about Jesus and grown exponentially in my love for His Word, He has shown me that it is a responsibility to the up and coming generations that the older women be willing to teach the Word to them. Not always in a class setting, but by lifestyle, priorities, counsel, and actions. And with each passing year, I am increasingly passionate about seeing the young generation of ladies be challenged to follow Jesus completely, without being tainted by the world around them.

I have the privilege to teach once in a while at Beautiful You - the teen women's club at our church. Club started up for the year a couple of weeks ago, and I was led by the Lord to teach about God's standard for beauty. His Word is His standard. Jesus is our example for beauty. And as women, there are a couple places in the Bible where God clearly lays out what He considers a beautiful woman to be and do. Proverbs 31 is a great start (check out my entry Her Worth is Far Above Rubies! for more about her!). The other place is Titus 2:3-5. Here, the Lord describes what He expects of women in the church. Women who are older are supposed to live a life of teaching the younger ladies what it means to be a godly woman, so that God's Word will not be blasphemed!

So, I traded a career teaching 7th grade math (which is actually quite fun! And crazy! And...mostly crazy!) for a lifetime career of teaching women who are younger than I am what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly and refine their God-given standard of beauty in the process. It may not pay any material bills, but the eternal scope of what God is asking of me is astounding. Not because I am a great teacher but because Jesus prepared me to do this before I was ever created (see Ephesians 2)!!

And if you are reading this, and you are a woman who belongs to Jesus, let me encourage you that you, too, are called to be a Titus 2 woman. The Lord will equip you with everything you need to teach the younger generations, if you will obey Him! Do your daughters need teaching? How about a lonely young mother? Or the college-aged ladies who don't yet know what God wants them to do with their lives? Reach out! Don't hoard the lessons God has taught you for yourself - share His Word and His Truth with those who are younger than you. [And, in return, be prepared to be taught by them, too]

Oh, Lord, may every single moment be spent pointing my husband, my daughters, and all of the young women in my life to Your holiness and beauty!!! Oh, that every breath would bring You the glory You deserve!

In His grace, and
for His glory!
Lisha :)

...her worth is far above rubies!

Let me introduce you to a woman that I have learned much from and have come to love dearly!

She is kind. She is strong, both emotionally and physically. She is a hard worker. She makes wise financial investments. She doesn't get tired often. She makes all of the clothes for her entire family. Her husband is a respected member of the community. She has compassion on those who are needy. She is faithful. She is not an angry or contentious woman. She is full of joy and has no fear about her future. She loves working with her hands.

She is the woman described in Proverbs 31. The "Excellent Wife" (or Virtuous Wife, depending on the translation you use). Here she is, in all her beauty:

Who can find a virtuous wife?
For her worth is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
so he will have no lack of gain.
She does him good

and not evil all the days of her life.
She seeks wool and flax,

and willingly works with her hands.
She is like the merchant ships,

she brings her food from afar.
She also rises while it is yet night,

and provides food for her household,
and a portion for her maidservants.
She considers a field and buys it;

from her profits she plants a vineyard.
She girds herself with strength,

and strengthens her arms.
She perceives that her merchandise is good,
and her lamp does not go out by night.
She stretches out her hands to the distaff,

and her hand holds the spindle.
She extends her hand to the poor,
yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of snow for her household,
for all her household is clothed with scarlet.
She makes tapestry for herself;

her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates,
when he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies sashes for the merchants.
Strength and honor are her clothing;

she shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom,

and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
She watches over the ways of her household,
and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
“Many daughters have done well,
but you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing,
but a woman who fears the LORD,

she shall be praised!!
Give her of the fruit of her hands,

and let her own works praise her in the gates.
[Proverbs 31:10-31]

Every time I read this passage - underlined, highlighted, circled, noted to the max in my Bible - I am further inspired and convicted that I want to imitate her. In providing a husband and children for me, the Lord has placed on me the high and noble calling of growing into the Proverbs 31 woman - a virtuous wife and mother. A strong, intelligent, financially sound, wise, diligent, compassionate, selfless, (seemingly) tireless lady who spends her time taking great care of her husband, children, maidservants (I wouldn't mind having a couple of those around!), and her home.

The Lord has given me a deep desire to be more and more like this lovely lady, who smiles at all the days to come. Even though she knows each day will require hard work and there probably won't be much appreciation. She doesn't do it for the applause - she does it because she loves her family and fears the LORD. She knows this is what He is asking of her, and she tries to do it excellently!

It breaks my heart that there seem to be so few women who really desire to be virtuous wives today (there are plenty who want to be good wives by a modern standard, but not many that would follow a scriptural definition). Why is it that so many women scoff incredulously at being like the woman of Proverbs 31?

I think it has to do with the lies we've bought into about being modern-day women.
*"Her lamp doesn't go out at night AND she's up early dishing out food, even for her maids?! When does she get her recommended 6-8 hours of sleep? I could never do that. I'm a night owl/earlybird/fill-in-the-blank-with-reasons-you-don't-want-to-be-like-her!!!"
*"When does she have girls' nights out away from her kids? I need a break from my family every so often. I could never be so diligent. I need time for myself!"
*"Make things instead of buying them?! Spend my days cleaning my house and teaching my children to be good stewards of what we have? But I've got too many meetings and too many playgroups and too many church activities; I'm tired, and I don't have the time to do those things. Besides, I can just buy food and clothes and my kids will learn real-life skills from their school!"

...and on and on and on and on they go. The many reasons why we, as wives and moms, don't believe we can fill the shoes of the woman God has lauded as 'virtuous'. She is a relic of the past; she is the standard of a different time when there weren't modern conveniences and 'liberated' women.

And some of you may be thinking...
Times have changed, Lisha! Life's not like that anymore! It's too traditional/old-fashioned/backwards/insulting to expect that a woman's 'occupation' should be only to be an excellent wife and a mom! What a waste of talent and strength, to keep a woman at home!

My friends, especially my married and/or mom friends: the honorable title of "Excellent Wife" is a great reward. It is valuable! And it IS doable! Not because women are awesome, but because God is awesome and in His grace he allows us to be slowly (over a lifetime!) transformed into a godly, virtuous wife and mom. And He gives us wisdom as we grow to see that being "just" a wife and mom is a most glorious and wonderful calling.

If God has given you with a husband and/or children, He bids you to come to Him, and He will cover your shame and shortcomings with abundant grace. He invites you to accept His forgiveness of your sins, and to walk gloriously in the role of wife and mom He's made you for!!

Does it mean that you're going to wake up early each morning with a big smile on your face and never get mad and you're going to have to be a perfect wife and mom every moment of every day? No! Because we all have sinned and fall short of God's glory and His perfect standard, no woman is capable of being a perfect wife or mom. Not you, not me (oh, golly, certainly not me! I miss that mark every hour...), not anyone. The Lord has given us mercy in that area through Jesus' atonement for our sin. He asks that we strive for excellence, not perfection. And in those moments when we fail, He picks us up, encourages us with His Word and His love and other women who are in the same situation, and gives us grace to keep striving.

My prayer right now is that you would be inspired to hope for and work toward excellence as a wife and mom, if you've been called to those. That you would desire to spend your days loving your husband and/or your children, even if it means dropping some other things. Love always involves a sacrifice; for wives and moms, it's usually a sacrifice of time (and sleep). I am praying for you, dear one, that you would joyfully realize that being a wife and/or mom is beautiful role and that you would want to emulate this lady. What better way to share (and grow in) the love, patience, grace, mercy, and forgiveness of Jesus Christ than to start with those you love the dearest?

Dear friend, if you are a wife or mom or a homemaker, it's not just because you chose it, but because the Lord created you for it long before the foundation of the world. Your work is important to Him. It is no little thing to be "just" a wife and mom. Great men & women throughout all of history were nurtured and raised by women who took their "job" seriously and strove for excellence. Will your husband or children be raised to greatness because of your excellence and obedience, for God's glory? Join me on this journey of growth in grace and excellence...

P.S.

...her worth is far above rubies. [v.10]

Rubies are some of the most valuable gems on the planet. A real ruby is rarer than many other gemstones. And God - the God who spoke all of the rubies ever into existence  - the God who never, ever changes - declares that a wife who strives for excellence in her role is MORE VALUABLE than rubies. You, as you choose to grow in excellence, are more precious to God than the rarest gems on Earth. And infinitely more beautiful.

Want to know a bit more about rubies? Check out www.gemstone.org and search "Gem by Gem" for them. Read about how rare a perfect ruby is, and be encouraged that your work in your home and the work God is doing in your heart is worth more than the money people spend on gems.

your new wardrobe

I got to go clothes shopping on Friday with my mom. She took me as a belated birthday/Christmas gift, and we had a great time. I haven't been shopping with the intention of picking out clothes for myself in a long time, and I ended up with 2 pairs of corduroy pants (marked down to $10 from $40, each! Score!), a cute skirt, two sweaters, and two shirts. All for $60. It was wonderful.

Since Friday, I have tried on my new clothes over and over again. Like new crayons (see my previous note), new clothes bring a smile to my face. Since I don't get them often, I thoroughly relish the experience of trying on new clothes and wearing them for the first time. Yesterday morning I was putting on my grey cords (which are so ridiculously comfy!) and one of the new shirts and I noticed how I tend to stand up straighter and be extra careful when I am wearing brand new clothing. How I tend to feel better about my outward appearance when I am wearing new clothes.

And there was a lesson for me in the way I paraded myself around in new clothing.

God tells us not to worry about our clothing (Matthew 6, Jesus' Sermon on the Mount), because He will give us the clothing we need to protect us. [He does not promise, however, to fill our master walk in closets with hundreds of pairs of shoes or a dresser full of fancy underthings or an excessive number of shirts, pants, or sweaters! That's materialism and vanity, folks.] God makes it clear to us, throughout His word, that He desires that we should beautify our souls and let Him change our hearts to be more like that of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. He also tells us which characteristics to take off. This is the passage that flashed through my mind as I stared at my new clothes in the mirror yesterday morning:

But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.

Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. [Colossians 3:8-17]

...and this is the passage that was staring me in the face, since it's taped to the mirror in the bathroom:
Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. [1 Peter 3:3-4]

Isn't it fantastic that God is more concerned with our inward appearance than our outward one? He gave us our bodies; He controls our genetic makeup and because of that, we are each beautiful to Him, just the way we are on the outside. But even so, He cares more that our soul is beautiful, that out of the overflow of what's in our hearts come forth praises and thanksgiving on our lips and in our actions.

God also promises that once the decision is made by you and I to accept the sacrifice of Christ's life as payment for our sins, that we are new in Christ: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. [2 Corinthians 5:17]

And so, as I stood there in my new clothes, which I do very much appreciate still, I realized that my focus had been all wrong. I shouldn't be parading about in my new clothing, even if it looks nice on me or if it was a great deal. I need to let myself get that excited about putting on the virtues of God that make a lady truly beautiful from the inside out.

What are you putting on today, dear friend? Did you spend more time making your outer self look fantastic to hide the ugliness of your sin? Did you spend time today purifying your heart, that you might be more like the Lord Jesus? Put on love. Put on thankfulness. Put on joy and praise. Those things never go out of style; they are expensive but they are worth every sacrifice made to own them. Take off those bitter grudges that weigh down your soul. Take off anger. Take off your cynicism and your pessimism. Take off anxiety. Be free of those qualities that taint your spirit and add emotional weight to your life - put on the characteristics of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

For His glory!

Broken Crayons

Elizabeth and Abby received four new boxes of crayons for Christmas. There are many things that I enjoy about life, and a brand new box of crayons is one of them. There is just something comforting about opening a new box that has nice, neat, unmarred, pointy crayons, with the paper intact, that brings a smile to my face.

At our home, we keep all of our crayons in one of those old butter cookie tins (the blue one...you know which kind I'm talking about, right?) because it's easier to contain them all in that than for me to order each box by color every time the girls use them. As I was dumping all of the new, happy, perfectly good crayons into the tin, I thought "I'm going to use this opportunity to get rid of the broken crayons!" They are such an eyesore when you open the tin and they tend to get scattered, somehow, all over the house. And who really needs more than 200 crayons and crayon bits, anyway?

Immediately after that thought, another thought gently spoke to my heart: "The broken ones are still useful." And so I, not wanting to throw away things that are still useful, sighed and put the broken ones back in the tub, and carried on with my day.

As I pondered why in the entire world I was prompted to seemingly keep the broken crayons, I was also in the middle of reading a book called 'Open Heart, Open Home'. I've read it many times before, and it is a favorite of mine. It is about how to provide hospitality to a world full of people who are hurting. Who are broken. Kind of like those crayons I considered tossing.

You know the kind of people I'm talking about. Chances are, whether or not you would admit, you are the kind of person I'm talking about. Like crayons, people get overworked, broken and misused. Sometimes they've been dulled by strain and overuse, and no one around will take time to sharpen them. Sometimes the outside layers get torn and no one is around to tape them up. Some people are mishandled, physically or emotionally, and they break in two.

But, friends, the broken ones are still useful. How many 'broken crayons' do you know? If you know me, and I'm quite sure you do, you are friends with at least one broken crayon. Look around. Your life is full of them, I'll bet. But, the broken ones are still useful!

Broken crayons are excellent for those rubby drawings - you know when you lay the crayon on its side and use it for a leaf or stone rubbing? They're also good to melt down to make a brand new crayon. Sometimes all you have to do is sharpen it a bit or wrap it in scotch tape to make it whole again.

Broken people are just as beautiful and just as useful (and oftentimes moreso) than people who (seem to) have it all together. My friend, the Bible is rich with stories of broken people whom God used mightily. Look them up!

Take some time to invest in the 'broken crayons' around you. Pick up the phone. Write a letter. Send a note on Facebook. Or, better yet, go see them in person if you can. God tells us to encourage one another and to love one another, even and especially in times of brokeness. Remind your husband, wife, children, parents, brothers, sisters, extended family, best friends, coworkers, and everyone you know that is experiencing the pain of being broken right now that they are still useful, indeed, and that the God who made them can restore them!

And if you are the broken crayon that I'm talking about, let me just remind you, from one who has been broken (and whom God has had to tape back together many times!), that you are a treasure - even in your brokeness. Whether you are hurting physically, mentally, spiritually, or emotionally, God has so much in store for you. He made you with a purpose and you are not alone in your brokeness. I'm praying for you tonight, that you would know how unique and useful you are and how very much you are loved!!

Broken,
for His glory!
