Thankful November - Day 11

Grateful this morning for those who were and are willing to lay down their lives for others. Specifically, today, for veterans! They are a sweet example of Jesus, of His being willing to give His life so that others might live abundantly.

Thank you, dear veterans. And thank You, Jesus, for calling these men and women to a life of service & sacrifice!

For His glory!

Thankful November - Day 10

I'm thankful!

...that God commands one day of rest in seven. for the chance to go to NY to celebrate my brother's 30th birthday (Happy birthday, bud! I love you!), and for the man that my brother is. that he's not just my brother, but a good friend. that Hannah loves to cuddle and have her feet rubbed when she's sleepy. for all the windows on the east side of the house, so the sunshine floods in. for 9 hours of sleep...in a row. for old hymns and the rich truth they share! for intensely difficult seasons and impossible situations, because trials produce perseverance, which produces character, which produces hope!

Your turn - what are you thankful for today?

Thankful November - Day 9

For my brother-in-law Ben (happy birthday!). For surprise date nights with Will. For chicken noodle soup & popcorn dinners (thanks to the girls). For open, starry skies and soft moonlight. For the blessing of rejoicing with those who rejoice. For the depths of God's mercy when I screw up, which is quite often. For homeschooling. For Abby wanting to play a duet with me once she learns more notes on her flute. For the 'half-price bakery bonanza' at the grocery store last night. For the last of autumn's splendor on the trees before the barrenness of winter creeps in...

I'm thankful.

What out-of-the-ordinary thing are you grateful for today?

Thankful November - Day 8

Happy Friday!!

My life did not turn out the way I dreamed it would. If I'd known 10 years ago about the coming trials and tough times...I would have cowered in fear of my future - and missed out on the vast blessings & lessons that came mingled with them.

Today, I am SO thankful that I did not get my way; that God's heart for me all along was to work through the trials & major decisions to strengthen me so that through my life others might see how faithful He is.

What are you thankful for today?

Thankful November - Day 7

Ginger tea to soothe a grumpy tummy. Clean, running water. When people come alongside you in times of heartache in ways that you know you'll never, ever be able to repay. That Jesus lives to always intercede for me. My mistakes, each and every one, because God has worked through them all to shape my heart. George Muller & his vision for the orphans of Bristol. That E&A can read! 13 years of memories with Will. Fuzzy slipper socks. Tutoring math. Having a reliable van. Falling gas prices. Music that stirs my soul. Crazyfun dance parties with my girls. And you

{the things I'm grateful for this morning}

Thankful November - Day 6

Thankful...

for the ecard that I saw posted a bunch of times yesterday about 'November being the time of year when people who complain all year stop and be thankful for 30 days'...and how much that stung because I feel like it was written with me in mind! I complain & grumble too much!! So, I'm thankful for that reminder, along with so many verses, that urge me to live a whole life of thanksgiving - not just 30 days a year, for online friends to see...but a deep wellspring from my heart of true gratefulness to God, 'for He has dealt bountifully with me.' {Psalm 13:6}

I'm also thankful for everyone who has gone to the throne of grace on behalf of Elizabeth. The doctor said yesterday that things are looking good and in the next couple weeks, a plan will be in place for the remaining few steps on the road to recovery.

What are you grateful for today?

Thankful November - Day 5

Giving thanks today for...

the doctors, surgeons, nurses, & everyone else at CHaD [the regional children's hospital], because God has worked through them to make E's life so much more comfortable. The peace of God that surpasses all understanding when I just can't see the next step!! Candles & fresh flowers. Old journals & scribbled margin notes that remind me of God's ridiculously impeccable faithfulness. My mom & dad and 'little' brother - and all the sides of my family (Lane/Hunter/Huston)...I've been shaped by each one and love them all dearly! Will searching to the ends of the YouTube universe for my favorite 90's songs and the ensuing impromptu singalongs.

How about you?

Thankful November - Day 4

What are you grateful for on this Monday Morning?

I'm grateful for:
celiac disease,
because it's taught me more than I really wanted about taking better care of my family's health through food.
dirty dishes,
because it means we are eating well.
muddy shoes & socks,
because that means my daughters are taking nature walks with Daddy.
old paint-covered t-shirts,
because they tell a tale of sisters having fun painting together.
midnight cries,
because they mean I get to comfort & snuggle my babies one more time.

Thankful November - Day 3

This morning, I give thanks...

that what the Law could not do, God did [Romans 8]! for will and how much i've grown because of him, in good times & bad. that church is not merely a building, but the people there. for picnic suppers & frosted sugar cookies. for outstanding novels and the ability to read them. for (too-) early morning snuggles with my hannahbear and nosey-nosey-s with abby and surprise tickle attacks by elizabeth. that encouragement can come from the most unlikely sources and that God sends it at just the right time, every time!

How about you?

Thankful November: Day 2

Today, I'm thankful for:

the sea salt/caramel combo (win!). Cooking scrambled eggs & bacon for my family on Saturday mornings. The horses next door (my girls love to watch them). Unusually warm fall evenings, and a crystal clear night sky for star-gazing. A freshly mopped kitchen floor. Vinegar & baking soda being able to clean pretty much everything. Will's contagious laugh (even though I don't always understand his humor). Epsom salt foot soaks. God's steadfastness to teach me as soon as I'm willing to learn - never forcing or coercing but just waiting for me to ask!

Thankful November: Day 1!

Five years ago, I began posting a simple, daily status update during November with things that I was thankful for. And there was a sweet response from many of my Facebook friends! It's become a tradition, and this is the first year I'll be a) blogging more about it, and b) inviting you all to join in!

Here are some verses that come to mind when I think about making a habit of being thankful:

Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus! [1 Thessalonians 5:18]

Oh! Give thanks to the Lord,
call upon His name;
make known His deeds
among the peoples!
[Psalm 105:1]

Every good and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, in whom there is no variation or shadow of turning!! [James 1:17]

{There are many more! I'd love it if you share your favorite "thankful" verses, too!}

Today, I'm thankful for:

Jesus, and His unfathomable patience with me, a sinner! The whole idea of the marriage covenant - how beautiful. The radiant warmth of the pellet stove on chilly fall evenings. Singing praise songs with my daughters after breakfast. The times when Will makes the bed or puts away clean clothes. Having a washer & dryer in the kitchen. Piping hot tea in my favorite mug, cozied under handmade quilts with giggly little girls. God supplying all our needs - in ordinary and extraordinary ways. My Beautiful You ladies - all of them. Dear friendships that can pick right up where we left off, even if it's been a while.
